A dedicated team of nine volunteers from St John Ambulance and Rescue recently travelled to the United Kingdom to participate in an intensive training program with the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MF&RS). This initiative aims to significantly enhance the NGO’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) capabilities, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to improving emergency response and disaster management strategies.
The training was conducted at MF&RS’s newly inaugurated Training and Development Academy in Aintree, Liverpool. As the most technologically advanced emergency service training site in the UK, this state-of-the-art facility provides unparalleled resources and expertise in developing cutting-edge search and rescue techniques. Equipped with realistic simulation environments, the academy offers a unique opportunity for hands-on experience, crucial for preparing responders for real-world scenarios.
The comprehensive training program concentrated on essential skills for responding to catastrophic building collapses. St John Ambulance and Rescue volunteers engaged in specialised theoretical and practical training, covering critical areas such as casualty search techniques, securing and shoring unstable structures, lifting and moving large, heavy construction materials, and breaking and breaching through obstructive structures. Mastery of these skills is vital for executing successful rescue operations in high-pressure and time-sensitive environments, ensuring the highest chances of survival for those trapped in disasters.
St John Ambulance and Rescue and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have enjoyed a fruitful collaboration for over 15 years. This recent training trip further solidifies the bond between the two entities, reinforcing mutual commitments to safety, excellence, and community service. In a testament to the success and importance of this collaboration, we are excited to announce that later this year, a team of senior officers and firefighters from MF&RS will visit Malta.
Such training is a key component of St John Ambulance and Rescue’s broader strategy to enhance its Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) capabilities. By ensuring swift and effective responses during major emergencies, where every second counts, we aim to save more lives and mitigate disaster impacts. To achieve this, significant investment in specialized equipment is essential. Therefore, St John Ambulance and Rescue Malta is seeking donations to support this crucial initiative.
St John Ambulance and Rescue remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering international partnerships and leveraging global expertise to improve its services and safeguard our communities. By continuing to learn from and work with leading experts worldwide, the voluntary organisation strives to ensure its emergency services remain at the forefront of disaster preparedness and response.
