On the 13th of September 2025, St John Ambulance & Rescue, together with Coast is Clear and Calypso Sub-Aqua Club, successfully organised a major underwater clean-up at Ċirkewwa South Quay. Thanks to the efforts of 70 volunteers, including divers and support teams, more than 500kg of debris was recovered from the seabed.
The clean-up aimed to protect marine life, enhance diver safety, and raise awareness on the importance of safeguarding Malta’s seas. Volunteers worked side by side with various entities, highlighting the power of collaboration in tackling environmental challenges.
The clean-up was supported by a wide network of partners and entities:
- Armed Forces of Malta (AFM)
- Civil Protection Malta
- Ċirkewwa Marine Park divers
- Transport Malta
- ERA – Environment & Resources Authority
- Mellieħa Local Council
- The Malta Police Force
Further support was provided by Farsonsdirect, who ensured refreshments for volunteers, as well as Watercolours Dive Centre and Dive Systems Malta, who contributed with equipment and resources.
The initiative was also honoured by the presence of Dr. Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and Hon. Julia Farrugia Portelli, Minister for Inclusion and Voluntary Organisations, both of whom commended the role of NGOs and volunteers in environmental protection. They highlighted the clean-up as a strong example of effective partnership between civil society, authorities, and local organisations.
This initiative forms part of St John Ambulance & Rescue’s VOPS-supported project, funded by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector. The project enabled the purchase of a new coastal rescue truck and the launch of public awareness campaigns focused on diving safety, coastal protection and marine conservation.
