On Sunday 14th April 2013, trustees and delegates from the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) were welcomed to Fort Madalena, for a special visit ahead of their regional meetings in Malta.
During the visit, our volunteer rescue team carried out live rescue demonstrations, showcasing their technical capabilities and readiness in maritime and land-based emergency response. Guests also enjoyed a guided tour of the historic fort, followed by a reception in the Lecture Room, providing a relaxed setting for valuable networking and the exchange of ideas between members of both organisations.

This visit was held on the eve of the IMRF’s regional Search and Rescue (SAR) meeting, hosted at the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) Maritime Squadron Headquarters from 15th to 17th April, in collaboration with the Italian and US Coast Guards. The sessions featured open dialogue on key operational and strategic challenges in international maritime rescue. Officers from the St John Rescue Corps actively participated, contributing insight, experience, and practical perspectives relevant to modern rescue operations.
The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) brings together leading maritime search and rescue (SAR) organisations from around the world under a shared mission: “Preventing loss of life in the world’s waters.” Accredited by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the IMRF supports its members through collaboration, training, and funding—ensuring that SAR services remain effective and available to all, free of charge.
We are proud to be an affiliate member of the IMRF, and remains committed to strengthening international partnerships in the field of emergency response and life-saving operations.
